Bartow is where Polk County does its official business — the courthouse, the school board, the sheriff's office — but the reason to drive over from Lake Wales is the streetscape. Wide brick-edged avenues under live oaks, block after block of late-Victorian and Craftsman houses, and a downtown that never got scraped for a strip mall.

It is an easy 25 minutes on SR-60 straight west. Pair the History Center with lunch on Main Street and you have a solid half-day; add Mosaic Peace River Park and it becomes a full one.
