For barbecue, the destination is Smokin' DJ's BBQ at 337 East Stuart Avenue, a smoke-stained counter-service operation that sits on the eastern edge of the mural district and runs on a brisket-and-rib rhythm that locals have memorized. The brisket is offered only on Fridays and Saturdays, it sells out by mid-afternoon, and the consistent star across the rest of the week is the dry-rubbed ribs, which arrive with the kind of bark that does not need to be argued for. You order at the counter, you sit at the picnic tables under the awning, you bring your own appetite and a stack of napkins. For coffee, walk west to the Rhodesbilt Arcade at 15 North First Street, where the Lake Wales Latte Lounge is the only place downtown pulling espresso to genuine third-wave specification, roasting their own beans in-house, and pouring an honest cortado that is the move on a hot afternoon. The Latte Lounge is also the de facto bulletin board of downtown — the corkboard inside the front door is how the open mic, the theatre auditions, the maker markets and the city events actually circulate.
For a fifties diner cheeseburger executed without irony, Vibbin' Vinny's is a few doors east of the murals on Stuart Avenue, with vinyl booths, a working jukebox, a single-patty smash burger that holds together under sauce, and a strawberry milkshake that is large enough to split with a second human. For tea — actual afternoon tea, with proper finger sandwiches, scones, clotted cream, the works — Lady B's Tea Parlour is the only place in the central Florida ridge region taking the format seriously, and reservations are strongly recommended for the full-service seatings on weekends. For seafood, Melanie's Seafood Company is the platonic ideal of the Florida roadside seafood shack: fried gulf shrimp, grouper sandwiches, hush puppies, sweet tea, and a Facebook page that is significantly more reliable than any third-party hours listing you will find online.
For a proper dinner with a bar, the most adult option downtown is The Thirsty Dragon Tavern at thirstydragonpub.com, which keeps a larger and more deliberate menu than the daytime counter-service options and is the one place downtown with an actual pub atmosphere — booths, a full bar, a beer list that updates seasonally, and the kind of low-light, mid-volume room that works equally well for a quiet two-top and for a six-person table on the way back from a show at the Lake Wales Little Theatre two blocks away.
