Free things to do in Polk County, Florida.

This list is restricted to things that cost nothing to attend: public parks and their trails, public library programming, government meetings that are open to the public by law, free-admission markets and concerts, and roadside attractions with no gate or ticket. It doesn't include things that are merely inexpensive, or that have a free component bundled into a paid attraction — Bok Tower Gardens, for example, is a landmark worth visiting, but it charges admission, so it isn't on this list. Where we can't confirm whether something is currently free (programming and fee structures change), we say so rather than guess.

The downtown mural walk along Park Avenue and the surrounding blocks costs nothing beyond your own time. Lake Wailes Park has a free public shoreline walking path adjacent to downtown. The Lake Wales Public Library runs regular public programming; check its current schedule directly for story times, meeting rooms, and adult programs. On the recurring-event side, the first-Wednesday Market Plaza Open Mic and the periodic Lake Wales Live concert series at Market Plaza are both free and all-ages — see the events calendar for current dates. Lake Wales City Commission meetings are open to the public, as required for Florida municipal government.

Winter Haven's Chain of Lakes gives the city a string of public lakefront parks with free access, and downtown Winter Haven's historic district runs a free monthly First Friday street event with music and open shops. The Winter Haven Public Library system runs regular free programming as well. The weekly Winter Haven Farmers Market on Magnolia Avenue between 2nd and 3rd Street SW is free to attend — you pay only for what you buy — with produce, seafood, baked goods, plants, and food trucks on a Saturday-morning schedule.

Lakeland's downtown Lakeland First Friday is a free, family-friendly monthly street festival with a makers market and live music along Kentucky and Tennessee Avenues, with shops staying open late. Lakeland is also home to a well-regarded public park system built around its own chain of lakes, with free walking paths — Lake Mirror's downtown promenade being the most central example.

As the Polk County seat, Bartow has a historic downtown core, a courthouse square, and public meetings of the Polk County Board of County Commissioners that are open to attend.
